The Office of Religious Life joins the family and friends of Michael Britt in mourning his death on Sept. 14, 2022, of complications from acute respiratory distress syndrome. Michael was a revered church musician, synagogue organist, and choir director. We knew him best at the Chapel, however, as the performer behind the organ at our annual showings of the 1920s silent films Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. His composed and improvised accompaniments always supported and enhanced the action on the screen, whether the moment called for decorous elegance or thunderous brutality. His was a rare musical gift. Those who knew him, though, understand that the rarest gift of all was his ability to make friends everywhere he went.
