Welcome and Announcements: Dean Thames
Call to Worship
Anthem: Credo from Mass in C Minorby Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Reading: Matthew 22:15-22
Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.
Sermon: “Currency Exchange” by Dean Boden
Hymn: O God of Earth and Altar Llangloffan
Lyrics: O God of earth and altar, bow down and hear our cry; our earthly rulers falter, our people drift and die; the walls of gold entomb us, the swords of scorn divide; take not your thunder from us, but take away our pride.
From all that terror teaches, from lies of pen and voice, from all the easy speeches that make our hearts rejoice, from value’s profanation from honor sacrificed, from sleep and from damnation, deliver us, O Christ!
Awaken us to action and forge us into one, defying sect and faction; O God, your will be done. Oppressive systems snare us; our apathies increase. Great God, in mercy spare us for justice and for peace! (G. K. Chesterton & Jane Parker Huber)
Pastoral Prayer: Alexandra Miller-Knaack
Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
