March 7, 2010

Interested in becoming a part of the ALLY Project? All staff and faculty are invited to participate in a fantastic training that helps build a supportive and affirming climate for Princeton's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) campus community. Lis Maurer, Director of the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services at Ithaca College, will be facilitating both workshops.

9:30 a.m. NoonóSupporting LGBT Students, Staff and Faculty

This annual workshop covers a wide range of topics including language, support services, and resources. Designed specifically for staff and faculty, the Ally Project is intended to teach ways to better support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students and colleagues.

1 - 3 p.m.Transgender 101 - Understanding the Trans Experience

Over the past ten years, there has been an increase in the number of students and employees at Princeton who identify as transgender or genderqueer. However, there is still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about the transgender and gender variant experience. This program is open to all members of the Princeton University community and will focus on ways to be a ally to trans and gender variant students, staff, and faculty. The session will also discuss the use of language, what it means to identify as transgender or gender non-conforming, the experience of transgender students and employees, and resources you can utilize as an ally.

Facilitator, Lis Maurer is the founding Director of The Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services at Ithaca College and is a AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator and Counselor. Maurer is a professor of health and sexuality at several institutions and has published work on sexual orientation, gender identity, disability issues, and HIV/AIDS.

Sponsored by the LGBT Employee Resource Group, LGBT Task Force, Office of Human Resources, and Office of the Vice President for Campus Life.
